It's been a few weeks since I last posted NRL tips, but with only four rounds left before the start of the finals and 12 teams still with a chance to make the cut-off (top 8 ), things are starting to get interesting again.
I reckon that the Broncos' season will turn on this Sunday's game. If they have another shocker like last week, they might as well forfeit the next three games and save themselves a lot of embarrassment. But if they rally; and if Karmichael Hunt actually puts in an effort instead of standing around mentally counting the millions that he thinks he's going to make at AFL, they can beat the Panthers and start climbing back up the ladder. As Nathan Hindmarsh (Eels) said yesterday, "at this point, it's only important to make the top 8. It doesn't matter if you're 8th."
This week:
Titans def Rabbitohs
Cowboys def Bulldogs
Manly def Roosters
Dragons def Raiders
Eels def Warriors
Tigers def Sharks
Broncos def Panthers
Storm def Knights _________________ "I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left " - Seasick Steve. |

This weekend sees the last of the fixtures. As I type, the Dragons lead the Eels by 10 points, but I'm going with a gut feeling that the Eels will fight back and eventually win.
Other winners this weekend:
Bulldogs
[damn! The Dragons just scored again!]
Storm
Manly
Rabbitohs
Roosters
Penrith
[damn, damn! Soward just converted. Dragons 16 Eels 0, after 22 minutes...]
Broncos _________________ "I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left " - Seasick Steve.

Well, the Dragons won, 37 to zip. The old gut may have let me down, but it was great to see the Dragons play well again.
The delayed telecast of the Bulldogs v Tigers game has just begun, but I couldn't resist the temptation to check nrl.com for the score. Alas, it seems that I too have returned to the usual form: 0/2
But the only game that really matters this week is Knights v Panthers. Seven out of eight teams were already secure, but it will be either the Knights or the Panthers who will round out the eight finalists.
I have to go for the Panthers, if for no other reason than Andrew Johns' association with the Knights. Johns is a stain on Newcastle and the game of rugby league. _________________ "I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left " - Seasick Steve. |

As this thread has gone quiet and the Grand Final is upon us, I thought I had better revisit some of Mr. xxxx's predictions

And here's another memorable statement.
| Ian Moir wrote: | Learned opinions on Round 7:
The Eels' massive financial troubles will spill over on to the field and you can also count them down and out for 2009. |
Whilst we're talking about the Eels, how come Jarryd Haynes is allowed to play in the upcoming final, in contrast to what happened last year to Melbourne's Cameron Smith?
Is this a Sydney conspiracy? |

Well okay... I might have been a little wide of the mark on a few occassions, but the play-off system used by the NRL didn't help. A Dragons v Broncos "final" did happen, it was just a few weeks early
This Sunday's grand final should be a great game. Billy Slater v Jarryd Hayne - the best fullback in the game (Slater) v the next best fullback (Hayne). As for the charge on Hayne from last week, maybe he shouldn't have led with his knees, but it was nowhere near as bad as Smith's attack on Thaiday's head last year.
The Eels have been on fire since making it into the finals. Every game has been a 'must win' for them, while some of the other teams had second chances and still fell short.
...but the Storm will win this Sunday, by 8 points _________________ "I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left " - Seasick Steve. |

Your prediction has just sent a shudder through everyone in Melbourne.
This is one time when I hope you're right, but I must say, on your past tipping form, this is an extra burden Melbourne didn't need. |

Brilliant, Mr. Fourex, take a bow, almost got the margin exactly right.
I won't mock your NRL predictions anymore - this season. |

It was a great game to watch. The Eels did well and they tested the Stormers more than a few times in both halves. What let them down, particularly in the first half, was the high number of missed tackles - the same thing that cost the Broncos dearly when the Bronc's encountered the Storm in the semi's last week. I think that has more to do with the skill of Melbourne's ball runners, than any suggestion that the Eels (or Broncos before them) can't tackle.
Melbourne Storm is a top class outfit. You don't make it to four Grand Finals in a row on luck. Will they be there again next year? I doubt it. But I have been known to be wrong before _________________ "I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left " - Seasick Steve. |

The 2010 NRL season kicks off tomorrow night and no doubt there will be much rejoicing across the land! Well, Queenslanders and New South Welshlings are pretty happy about it, at least.
Apparently, television viewers are going to have a choice of rugby league shows this year. 9's 'The Footy Show' returned to the small screen tonight and 7 will be putting theirs to air at some point. Unfortunately, I can't watch either of these shows, because Andrew Johns is now a full-time panelist on 'The Footy Show'; and Matthew Johns will be hosting the new show on 7. I may be a rugby league fan, but I have standards!
Anyway, the Bulldogs will win the premiership this year because... well, just because _________________ "I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left " - Seasick Steve. |

It's great to see you maintaining your standards--on two fronts, the first, obvious to people familiar with the exploits of those two "gentlemen".
The other, your penchant for making rash predictions, which always prove to be, well, embarrassing. |

Of course it's impossible to tell too much after only one round, but I thought that the Bunnies showed a lot of class against the Roosters yesterday. The scoreline wasn't flattering for Souths, but there did seem to be a fair bit of substance in their play. Which is why I'm thinking that the Bunnies might have found what they were lacking in recent years.
And speaking of local loyalties... Despite a good showing from my local outfit - the Broncos - on Friday night, I think that there are just too many inexperienced players in the 2010 Brisbane team. Watch out for the Bronc's in a year or two, though. _________________ "I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left " - Seasick Steve. |

The 2010 NRL season has so far produced some cracking games. Unfortunately I didn't get to see Friday's clash between the Dragons and the Storm, but this afternoon's game between the Wests Tigers and the Canberra Raiders was great entertainment.
The Raiders started strongly, but the Tigers came back in the second half to take a convincing win. It's been this kind of inconsistency from half to half and/or week to week, that has made the start of the competition even more interesting.
The Storm and the Dragons still look 'the goods' at this stage, but a few injuries in those camps could blow this competition wide open, even before we get to State of Origin time. _________________ "I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left " - Seasick Steve. |

Hmmm... it appears that they made it to at least two Grand Finals on the back of 'creative accountancy'
What a huge disappointment this rorting is - for Melbourne Storm fans in particular and for the sport of rugby league in general.
All of the Storm's games this year should be declared forfeit, with two points going to every team that they have beaten so far; and every team that they are listed to play in the 2010 season. How can the NRL allow the Storm to play out this season, even sans premiership points? Why should any other team have to play against one that has been built illegally? _________________ "I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left " - Seasick Steve. |

I'm no NRL expert, but shouldn't that be FOUR grand finals.
Against that, I'd be surprised if no other teams are guilty of the same offence, even if for less significant amounts. |

If they are, they'd better start disposing of any evidence. I'd be surprised and more than a little disappointed if the NRL doesn't unleash a pack of forensic accountants to pore over the books of every club. And if it's found that the rorting is widespread, then perhaps it would be better to replace the salary cap with a player draft system like the AFL's. _________________ "I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left " - Seasick Steve. |

Salary cap controversy aside, tonight's games were great viewing.
The Bulldogs are back! The Broncos put up a good fight, but in the end cohesiveness and experience paid the dividend. Watch out for 'Baby Bronco' Mitch Dodds though. He has had the good sense to join the Cougars Weightlifting Club and once Ben and Miles succeed in helping him to unlearn the bad technique promalgated by highly-paid Strength & Conditioning Coaches (a ridiculously overloaded reverse curl is NOT a power clean!) he will burst on to the field with immense power.
Game 2 of Friday night football was between Damo's beloved North Queensland Cowboys and the Parramatta Eels. Sorry Damo, but even with J.T. the Cowboys are looking like... well... the Warriors. They should be good, but somehow they just fall short. But what about the Eels' Jarred Hayne? What a magnificent defensive full back he is!
As long as the NRL keeps dishing up games like these, it will weather the current storm. _________________ "I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left " - Seasick Steve. |
